Adults can now expect Sunshine in their day care
Everyone could use a little more sunshine in their life. That’s the motto at the Sunshine Adult Daycare Center which held an open house at 121 Broadway in Monticello recently to celebrate the opening of their new Monticello branch.
Sunshine has a unique philosophy when it comes to helping senior citozen take full advantage of their golden years. The facility specilizes in treating conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia, like other daycare and assisted living facilities, but they maintain the things that make life worth living in the first place: music, laughter and friendship.
Seniors and staff, as well as town and village officials, packed Sunshine’s open house party. They savored the music and dance performances of Rafael Roque and the Moticello Step Club.
The celebratory atmosphere underscored the central principle that has helped make Sunshine a success. Everyone there sees themselves less as patients or staff and more as one big family. Patients aren’t losing any of their independence when they walk in those doors they’re gaining the friends nd support that will help them retain their independence longer.
Employeees at Sunshine work to minimize the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Dementia through engagement programs such as cooking classes, musical therapy and day trips to exciting destinations throughout the state.
Sunshine offers comfortable transportation shuttles that can pick seniors up from home as well as drop them back off. The staff also assists in making physician appointments and will provide transportation to and from the doctor’s office too.
“We open our doors to embrace the young at heart every day”, said Sunshine Adult Daycare Director Jasmin Tejera. According to the website. “In addition to our everyday activities, Sunshine members enjoy taking monthly day trips together, hosting entertainers and guest speakers and holding special events that are open to the whole community.
Music therapy is an important part of Sunshine’s philosophy.
“We have a recording studio. We make CD’s for the people so they have a chance to hear themselves sing. I do vocal coaching. Sometimes there’s just people who want to hear a song that they haven’t heard in 15 or 20 years that brings back memories for them,” said Elai Tubo. “If you’ve got a heartbeat, you’ve got rhythem.”
Tubo has been producing records and voice recording for decades. He’s played a role inproducing some of the most iconic hip hop of the llast half century. Such a musical legend that Eric B & Rakim gave him a shout out in their 1987 song “Paid in Full” for his engineering skills.
When Jasmine told me about this place and the work they are doing, I jump onboard,” Tubo said. Sunshine adult Daycare offers full day programs tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 3:30pm
